Girl Who Sustained Critical Injuries in Yesterday’s Nakonde Accident Has Died

A young woman who sustained critical injuries in a road traffic accident in Nakonde on Wednesday afternoon has died.

Muchinga province police commissioner Kenneth Kan’gombe has confirmed her demise.

He has told Chete FM that Prudence Njovu, who was a pillion passenger on a motorcycle, passed away on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, around 23:00 hours while receiving treatment at Nakonde District Hospital.

Her body has since been deposited in the hospital mortuary awaiting a postmortem examination.

Prudence was involved in a hit-and-run accident that occurred earlier on Wednesday around 16:00 hours along the Great North Road, opposite the National Assembly offices.

According to eyewitness Betha Musukwa, the motorcycle Prudence was on, ridden by Prince Siame, was traveling south when a speeding, unregistered white Honda Fit rammed into them from behind.

The impact was severe, throwing Prudence off the motorcycle.

She was flung into the air and landed head-first onto the road, sustaining critical head injuries along with other bodily harm.

At the time of the accident, Prudence had just come from St Mary’s Catholic Church in Nakonde, dressed in her church wrapper, and was heading home to Chimuzombo village, about 1.5 kilometers from the accident scene.

The driver of the vehicle fled immediately after the crash, but was later pursued and apprehended by other motorbike riders about a kilometer away.

He was subsequently handed over to Nakonde Police.

Prudence was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), while the rider, Prince Siame, who also sustained injuries, remains admitted to the male ward.

Despite efforts by medical staff, Prudence later succumbed to her injuries 7 hours later, the same night.

She was a former student at Lukupa College of Nursing and Midwifery in Kasama, where she completed her studies last year.

The vehicle involved in the accident has been impounded and is parked at Nakonde Police Station, while the driver remains in police custody.
